Determining Snowmobile Stopping Distances:

Tests conducted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Arctic Cat. Stopping distances vary greatly as determined by snow and visibility conditions. The February 1998 tests used 1999 Arctic Cat ZL 600 EFI snowmobiles with stock .75 inch lug tracks. There were two runs for each test with the results being averaged. On hard-pack snow at an average speed of approximately 50 mph or 80 km/h once the drivers applied a "hard lock", it took approximately 155 feet to stop, or about 15-20 snowmobile lengths. At 33 mph or about 53 km/h, (our speed limits), it took approximately 85 feet or about 7-10 snowmobile lengths to stop.

Conclusion, people take about 3/4 of a second to react and stopping time is about 4.4 - 5.0 seconds to stop after that. You have traveled a great distance, and probably hit the machine in front if you fail to leave enough room. Snowmobiles ARE NOT CARS or TRUCKS. Leave plenty of room between machines and have a safe ride.

When on trails, watch for trees, curves etc. as the stopping distance can be the difference between your life and death. When traveling on roads etc., watch for vehicles entering your path. Being able to stop, might be impossible.

Determining Safety of ICE:

No Ice is Without SOME Risk.

From the Ontario Snowmobile Safety Committee. We reprint the information for information purposes only. Always check with local snowmobile clubs for more accurate information.

3" or 7 cm or less - STAY OFF
4" or 10 cm - Ice fishing, walking, cross country skiing
5" or 12 cm - 1 snowmobile or ATV
8-12" or 20-30 cm - 1 car or light truck
12-15" or 30-38 cm - 1 medium P/U truck, Sport Utility

Avoid: slushy ice, ice on or near moving water, ice that has thawed and refrozen, layered or rotten ice caused by sudden temperature changes. Snow covered ice can affect the quality of the ice. Pressure ridges can cause serious accidents if you hit one on the wrong angle. They can also warn of dangerous ice conditions.
